Castalian Quartet and David Waterman

By JW3

The London-based Castalian Quartet is already one of the world’s leading groups from the younger generation.

The Castalian Quartet have established themselves as one of the most exciting quartets on the world stage. They will display their inventiveness, imagination and finesse in a programme that begins with a delightful and elegant Haydn quartet which will showcase their impeccable technique. The gripping intensity of Janacek’s emotionally charged Kreutzer Sonata is followed by Schubert’s monumental String Quintet in C major. Joined by cellist David Waterman, the Castalian Quartet performs this hauntingly beautiful and heart-rending masterpiece – a favourite of audiences and players alike.

It is highly communicative, and its inventiveness, imagination and finesse are matched by its effortless technical command. They play one of the most delightful and joyous quartets of Haydn; Janáček’s extraordinary, wild and operatic first quartet; and Schubert’s almost unbearably beautiful and heart-rending quintet which is one of the most loved pieces in the canon, cherished by audience and players alike. David Waterman will play the extra cello part in the Schubert recital.
