The Errol McKellar Foundation

Every hour one man dies of prostate cancer in the UK

The Errol McKellar Foundation is a new registered charity founded in 2018 by football coach, former garage owner and prostate cancer survivor, Errol McKellar. Errol is a 61 year old former car mechanic who, until 2018, owned a garage in Hackney, London for more than 20 years. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2010. He didn’t have any symptoms but randomly read a leaflet in the waiting room of his GP and asked to be tested. His PSA level came back a bit high and further tests revealed he had 92% cancer in his prostate.

In February 2011 he had an operation to remove his prostate and after a further three months of radiotherapy was given the all clear although he is still dealing with some of the serious side effects from his treatment, including bladder control and erectile dysfunction. Knowing the huge impact that prostate cancer has had on him, his wife and his family Errol decided to dedicate all his spare time to raising awareness of the dangers of the illness and to engage as many men as possible in conversation about it which is why the new charity was created.

Errol says “We’re fighting for every man in Britain to have an annual prostate cancer check. Stopping prostate cancer in its tracks”

Prostate Cancer affects 1 in 8 men in the UK and 1 in 4 men from a black African or Caribbean background. Men aged 50 and over or with a family history of the illness are more at risk of getting prostate cancer. Errol is already one of Prostate Cancer UK’s main ambassadors along with many others that’re fronting their Stronger Knowing More campaign, which encourages black men to get PSA tests. We are looking to create a number of music, sport and entertainment based fundraising events in 2019 so that Errol and other ambassadors will be able to travel around the UK giving their talks.
